Crowned in 1872

For the house of Clive Christian, 1872 was a very special year. It was the year The Crown Perfumery was established in London and also the year in which Queen Victoria gave the perfumery permission to use the crown on its bottles, a signature ever since.

It was Queen Victoria’s way of letting the world know that these were complex perfumes made from precious ingredients; those that she thought were amongst the most beautiful in the world. She herself loved ‘Crown Essence’, made especially for her, while her daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, liked to wear ‘Crown Rose’. In 1999, when Clive Christian OBE acquired The Crown Perfumery Company, it seemed only right that he should delve into the archives, seek out what was finest and best, and then tweak and update it for modern tastes. So it was that 1872 came about.

The masculine version of 1872 is a fresh, spicy, citrusy chypre. Wonderfully rich and mysterious base notes come from Cedarwood, Amber, Patchouli, Frankincense and Musk, whilst right in the heart are Neroli, Freesia, Tagete Oil and Jasmine. Most interesting of all is Clary Sage, the sacred herb that Emperor Nero used to sprinkle over his troops before they went into battle, so invigorating and energizing did he deem it to be. Clary Sage is the perfect herb to support the top notes the top notes of Petitgrain, Grapefruit, Lime and Bergamot, as well as Galbanum and Lavender. Rosemary, Black Pepper and Nutmeg add a herby, spicy touch.

SHOP 1872 MASCULINE

The feminine version of 1872 is a floral fruity Citrus and smells like the most heavenly fresh flower bouquet. It, too, has Citrus in the top notes combining Bergamot, Tangerine and Lemon, as well as Blueberry and Coriander. But what provides its special heady air are the heart notes, especially the addition of Rose de Mai, a rose so rare it blooms only in May and, as it is picked, according to legend, angels hover overhead. The perfume also contains Lily of the Valley, Jasmine, Freesia and Orchid. The base notes of Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Musk, Amber and, most interestingly, Oakmoss add depth and complexity, making it an extraordinarily compelling perfume.
