What is the difference between Perfume, Cologne, Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum?

WHAT IS PERFUME?

Perfume offers the most superior concentration of essential and fragranced oils, sometimes up to 40%. This means its textures is more indulgent and should be applied sparingly to the pulse points. Perfume also offers astonishing longevity, often lingering for 24 hours. Perfume is the ideal way to enjoy your favourite scents, offering a clarity of fragrance that no other concentration can match. It may be the most expensive scent option but with its superior longevity and concentration, it can be used in much smaller amount.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

COLOGNE
Cologne contains around 2 to 4% of the perfumed oils that create the distinctive scent of a fragrance. It typically has a very light scent which dissipates quickly – often within 2 hours or less – and it’s often associated with less expensive brands and fragrances aimed at young people. Like all fragrances, the rest of the liquid is made up of alcohol and water. Given Cologne’s high alcohol content, it can sometimes cause a reaction for those with sensitive skin.

EAU DE TOILETTE
Eau De Toilette offers a slightly denser concentration of fragrance molecules than cologne, with between 5 and 15% of its volume made up by fragranced oils. This also means it attracts a slightly higher price tag than Cologne. An Eau De Toilette will however dissipate from the skin in a little over three hours and therefore requires regular application to achieve a consistent scent.

EAU DE PARFUM
The difference between Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum is, again based on the quality of scent. Eau De Parfum – sometimes referred to as Parfum – offers a more concentrated mixture of scented oils, often up to 20%. This gives Eau De Parfum a much healthier staying power and means it will linger on the skin for 5 to 8 hours. It attracts a higher price tag than both Eau De Toilette and Cologne.
