Jasmine, the king of flowers – complex, multifaceted and deserving of the utmost respect and skilful treatment. This versatile flower flirts with different finishes; from sweet and heady to green; from animalic and rich to musty, It is one of the most expensive, exotic and alluringly sensual ingredients in perfume.
Traditionally the scented secrets of the jasmine flower were extracted by a technique called enfleurage. A laborious time intensive process where individual petals are placed onto wax and turned by hand until the scent seeps fully into the wax. The wax will then be cleaned to create the absolute. It is more common now to use high tech but less laborious solvent extraction to give a clean absolute. Whilst the flowers are a pure white the absolute captured is a thick deep brown substance with hints of gold, much like how the petals of a flower brown with age and the scent becomes heavier. It can take around 10,000 single blossoms, all hand-picked, to produce just 1 ml of Jasmine Absolute, a key ingredient in every one of our Jasmine Perfumes.
Jasmine fragrances can be characterised by a sweet floral top note, often accompanied by a subtle but rich woody musk. While a predominantly floral scent, different species and growing conditions give birth to a range of characteristics. Fragrances that contain a high concentration of Jasmine are often described as having a sweet, green and rich smell. The jasmine scent is naturally mind-altering as it has mood-boosting and aphrodisiacal qualities, making its effects within perfume transformative.
Different varieties produce different fragrances. Green jasmine gives freshness like a spring day to a perfumer, the scent of the green vine unfurling in the sun and the first buds blossoming. Sweet jasmine is voluptuous in nature, adding fullness to a fragrance and imparting a heady aroma which is perfect for floral or gourmand perfumes.
